Prozac Information

Important Information About Prozac

Prozac, also known by its generic name fluoxetine hydrochloride, is a popular FDA-approved antidepressant medication belonging to a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which work by restoring the balance of chemicals in the brain. One such chemical is called serotonin, a neurotransmitter or chemical messenger in the brain that many scientists believe plays a big part in the development and severity of depression. Prozac works by slowing the reabsorption of serotonin     after its release, thereby boosting the levels of the chemical available in the brain.

Why Use Prozac

Prozac is widely prescribed for the treatment of depression (including pediatric depression), obsessive-compulsive disorder (in both adult and pediatric populations), bulimia nervosa, panic disorder, premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), hypochondriasis and body dysmorphic disorder. The popularity of the drug may be attributed to the fact that cases of overdose from the drug have been rare. Studies have also shown that it causes fewer adverse heart-related events (such as a drop in blood pressure or unusual rhythm), fewer anticholinergic effects (dry mouth, constipation, blurred vision, urinary retention) than tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), and it is less likely to cause drowsiness or weight changes also associated with the older TCAs.

Dosage

The maximum Prozac dose should not exceed 80 mg/day. The best course of action is to take Prozac exactly as it was prescribed to you. Since depression, bulimia, and OCD are chronic conditions, the doctor may put you on an alternative regimen of medication or change your current dose of Prozac.  However, your doctor may opt to lessen or increase the dosage depending on its effects (or lack thereof) on you. In some cases, a reduced dosage may be combined with a special diet to make sure that Prozac will not adversely affect preexisting conditions such as diabetes. Frequent consultation with a doctor will also help determine if Prozac can be continued for long-term treatment, especially if you are responding well to the drug. Don’t stop taking the drug abruptly; instead, discuss a plan of withdrawal with your doctor if you would like to discontinue the treatment.

Some Precautions When Taking Prozac

It is extremely important that you keep all appointments for office visits with your doctor, so that your progress while taking Prozac is clearly documented. This allows your doctor to adjust the dosage of the drug depending on how you are responding tot the treatment. You should also know that your mental health may change in unexpected ways when you take Prozac, often aggravating suicidal tendencies, especially at the beginning of your treatment and any time that your dose is increased or decreased. If you have any concerns about taking the drug or about any of its effects on you, please discuss them with your doctor.

If you think you might be pregnant, are pregnant, or breastfeeding,

be aware that the effects of Prozac during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. SSRI antidepressants may cause serious or life-threatening health problems in newborn babies whose mothers take the medication during pregnancy. If you are currently breastfeeding, be aware that this medication appears in breast milk, and breastfeeding is not recommended while you are taking Prozac because it could have undesirable effects on a nursing infant.

Side Effects

Among the most common side effects seen in people taking Prozac include anxiety or nervousness, insomnia, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, weakness, runny nose, sore throat, headache, flu symptoms, diarrhea, changes in appetite resulting in weight loss or gain, and sexual side effects (reduced arousal or satisfaction). Most side effects are mild and brief, usually subsiding in a week or two after beginning treatment, but sexual side effects often persist. However, some side effects such as seizure or convulsions, tremors, shivering, twitching, muscle stiffness, agitation, confusion, sweating profusely, fast or irregular heartbeat, problems with balance or coordination, allergic reactions, and a blistering skin rash may be serious and life threatening and need immediate medical attention.

Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have taken too much Prozac. Symptoms of a Prozac overdose may include nausea, vomiting, fever, sleepiness, rapid or uneven heartbeat, confusion, fainting, seizures, or coma.
